Total concept pitch
The East Capitol Urban, a green plot in the urban fabric of Ward 7, is located in the East of Washington D.C. Various crops are currently grown there by the local community in collaboration with the DC University, but issues of food scarcity and food equity remain unresolved, nonetheless. The capitol Washington D.C., a wealthy city, still experiences a large divide in demographics, wealth and health across the Potomac River. Our innovative concept for the East Capitol Urban tries to tap the existing potential and overcome the socioeconomic disparities by sustainable growth. This entails the production of nutritious and organic food at a larger scale, by means of aquaponics, a vertical farm, greenhouses, a food forest and a community garden. Access to these foods is key and we therefore reserve a fair share of our production and ensure distribution amongst the residents of Ward 7 through local grocers and the weekly farmer’s market. For a sustainable and circular food production, our farm has solar panels and a rainwater collection system from the rooftop of the main building. These will be used as energy and water sources for either the indoors production or outside production. In addition, compost, coming from our production facilities will be implemented to increase the food production. We ensure access and active engagement of the residents of Ward 7, who will be part of the co-creative development process of the urban farm and all its activities. A modular building concept allows for the growth of production and community spaces, simultaneous to the growth of a close-knit community, meaningful connections, knowledge, entrepreneurial initiatives, and the overall social capital. Spaces within the building are flexible and sizable to fit different purposes, hosting a variety of formats. These include workshops, lectures, concerts, communal dinners and any other format the residents of Ward 7 have a need for. Besides the creation of local jobs, the East Capitol Urban Farm will foster entrepreneurial initiatives its startup incubator and ensure long-lasting and sustainable economic growth. Let’s grow together!
